It is interesting to allow an area to return to its natural state. An upland woodland will grow if the land is left alone. Planting some native trees provides a good start. Creating a path through this area allows for a tranquil natural place to sit or read.   Sometimes a corner of a property can be allowed to grow naturally. We are just one more animal in the ecosystem and allowing that ecosystem to express itself is good for human health.
Rocks abound in New Jersey because much of the state is located in the terminal moraine of the Wisconsin glacier. Rocks are found whenever a garden is cultivated and can be used in the landscape as steps, borders for paths and as accents. Grape hyacinth and a variety of sedum love the root bound setting that rocks provide.
Even hardscape areas can be bordered by natural plantings. Bulbs grow well in these well-mulched plots. Trees and scrubs enhance the natural setting. Again, with yearly leaf mulch preserving moisture and providing nutrients, natural gardeners benefit from nature instead of fighting it.
